FAQ's

Q1. What is your class schedule?
Class sessions vary by location. Please check your nearest location for the schedule of dates and times.

Q2. When can I start?
New classes begin every Monday in St. Clairsville and Wintersville. Other locations usually begin the first Monday of every month. Call for specific dates and times.

Q3. Where are you located?
Our corporate office is located at 157 East Main St. in Clairsville. An additional class locations is 58 Maplewood Drive in Wintersville. We are also located at several area high schools, including Bellaire, Buckeye Local in Rayland, Harrison Career Center in Cadiz, Martins Ferry High, Monroe Central in Woodsfield, and Shadyside High.

Q4. What if I have to miss a class?
If a student is absent from one of their classes, the missed class can be made up on a corresponding date of the session from which the student was absent.

Q5. What is your class schedule in the Summer?
During the Summer, we have classes from 8:00 am to 12:15 pm Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for two consecutive weeks at the high schools. These usually begin monthly with the first Monday of the month. St. Clairsville and Wintersville classes remain on the same evening schedule throughout the year.

Q6. How do I register for classes?
Pre-registration is done by phoning our office at 1-800-U-DRIVE-2. Students may also pre-register on this website using the form on the Pre-Register page.

Q7. Does the parent have to be present for registration?
A parent or legal guardian must be present at the time of registration. Registration must occur prior to the student recieving any training from AmeriDrive by Stark Driving School. Registration is usually completed just prior to the first class session, but arrangements can be made to register in advance.

Q8. What do students need to bring with them to register for classes?
If the student has their temporary driving permit, they can bring it but no permit is necessary to attend class sessions. We also ask students to bring a notebook and pen.

Q9. What are students taught during the class?
We use curriculum developed by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. It covers such things as: handling emergencies, driving in different environments, natural laws, vehicle controls, visual sight patterns, purchasing vehicles, maintaining vehicles, trip planning and much more. Parents are always welcome to attend any class session.

Q10. When can a student start driving?
Driving can be scheduled after the student has completed all class sessions. Students will be scheduled for four two hour driving sessions. Scheduling can be made over the phone or in person.

Q11. Do you have both male and female instructors?
Yes, both are available upon request. AmeriDrive by Stark instructors are very knowledgeable as well as caring and dedicated to the students.

Q12. Do you provide the car?
AmeriDrive by Stark Driving School provides the vehicle for all driving sessions. Our cars are owned and insured by the driving school to ensure that the vehicles are properly maintained for the safest driving experience. All of our vehicles pass annual inspections by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. In accordance with the law, your vehicle cannot be used by the driving school for instructional purposes.

Q13. How many students are in the car at a time?
Only one student is in the car at a time with the instructor unless they are uncomfortable with this and ask that a second student be scheduled to ride along for observation time in the back seat.

Q14. How late do you drive?
We will drive until 10:00 pm when necessary.

Q15. Do you drive if the weather is bad?
We will drive in all weather conditions unless the roads are extremely bad.

Q16. Where do you drive with students?
Driving areas include rural routes, residential areas, multi-lane interstate highway, heafvy traffic areas when available, parking lots and many other areas. We make an effort to cover most types of driving that will be encountered by teens.

Q17. Do students drive on the highway?
Yes, usually on their second drive all the students will have the opportunity to drive on the highway and utilize several on and off ramps and interchanges.

Q18. Do the 8 hours of drivers ed count towards the 50 hours?
No, by state law the 8 hours is not to be counted into the 50 hours that your parents must complete with you.

Q19. Can we use a driver ed car to take the driving test?
Yes. For an additional fee, we will provide a vehicle and instructor to accompany students for their driving test. This also includes time to practice maneuverability just prior to taking the test.

Q20. Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
Yes, we meet or exceed all state requirements for private driving enterprises. All of our instructors have recieved the state certified training and have passed background checks.

Q21. Do your vehicles have dual controls?
Yes, each of our vehicles is equipped with an auxiliary passenger brake and a mirror for the instructor to use while seated in the passenger's seat.

Q22. Do you accept credit cards?
Yes, we accept Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, as well as checks and cash.

Questions About the Permit Process

Q1. What is a temporary driving permit?
A temporary driving permit authorizes you to practice for your skills test by driving on the street. A licensed driver who is 21 years of age or older must be in the passenger seat next to you. If you are under the age of 16, you must ride with a parent, guardian, or certified driving instructor. Your temporary permit will expire one year from the date of purchase.

Q2. How old do I have to be to get my temporary driving permit?
You must be at least 15 years and 6 months of age to apply for your temporary driving permit.

Q3. Where do I get my temporary driving permit?
The permit packet can be purchased at the loval BMV.

Q4. What do I have to take with me to get my temporary driving permit?
When you go to get your temporary permit packet, you must bring two forms if identification (social security card and birth certificate). If you are under 18 years of age, your application must be co-signed by a parent or legal guardian at the time you apply. The co-signer must also present two forms of identification (social security card and birth certificate).

Q5. How long do I have to hold my temporary driving permit before I can get my drivers license?
If you are under 18 years of age, you must hold your permit for at least 6 months prior to taking your driving test. Your permit will expire 1 year from the date the packet was purchased.

Q6. At what point during the process should I take the classes?
Driver's education classes can begin any time after the age of 15 years and 5 months.

Q7. What requirements must be met before I can take driver's education?
You must be at least 15 years and 5 months of age before starting driver education. You do not have to have your temporary driving permit in order to take classes. You do not have to have any driving experience with your parents before you begin driving with our instructor.

Q8. Do I have to have my temporary driving permit to take the classes?
You do not have to have your temporary permit in order to begin class at AmeriDrive by Stark Driving School. The classroom portion can be done with or without your temporary permit. You must have your temporary permit before scheduling the driving portion.

Q9. What do I need when I drive?
You must always carry your temporary driving permit as well as eye glasses or contact lenses if you are required to wear them when you drive.

Q10. Who can drive with a student who has a temporary license?
Any student between the age of 15 1/2 and 16 years of age who holds a validated driving permit can only drive with a parent, legal guardian, or licensed driving instructor. Any student who is between 16 and 18 years of age and holds a validated driving permit can drive with a licensed driver over the age of 21 years. The licensed driver must be seated in the passenger seat while the student is driving.
